Guests of the Most Merciful: The Honor of Pilgrims and the Virtue of Serving Them

Introduction

Each year, millions of Muslims answer Allah’s call to visit His sacred House. The Prophet ﷺ described them as “The Delegation of Allah.”

Hajj and Umrah are not only spiritual journeys—they are acts of devotion that grant the pilgrim a special honor. And serving the pilgrims is considered among the greatest acts of worship in Islam.

This article explores the status of the pilgrim, the religious value of serving them, and highlights the modern achievements in Hajj services.

Pilgrims Are the Delegation of Allah

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The warrior in the cause of Allah, the pilgrim, and the one performing Umrah are the delegation of Allah. He called them, and they responded; they ask Him, and He gives them.”
(Ibn Mājah – authenticated by Al-Albani)

This hadith shows that pilgrims are honored guests of Allah. They leave their homes, families, and wealth behind to seek Allah’s pleasure—so it is a religious duty to welcome them, serve them, and facilitate their journey.

Serving Pilgrims: A Noble Act of Worship

In Islam, serving pilgrims is a righteous deed, elevated in reward. Allah says:

“That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.”
(Qur’an – Al-Hajj: 32)

This includes everything from cleaning the mosque, offering water and food, to guidance and support, as all are expressions of honoring Allah’s sacred sites and His guests.

A Shining Example: Saudi Arabia’s Hajj Services

Today’s era has witnessed unprecedented organization and care in Hajj services, especially by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Among the most notable achievements:

  • Massive expansion of the Two Holy Mosques

  • Advanced transportation systems for pilgrims

  • Free medical care and preventative health services

  • Global multilingual Islamic guidance programs

  • Distribution of free Qur’ans and clean water

  • Intelligent crowd management solutions

All these efforts reflect the Kingdom’s commitment to Islamic values, mercy, and service toward the Guests of the Most Merciful.

Obeying Hajj Regulations: A Religious Obligation

A key part of respecting Hajj is complying with official regulations, including the Hajj permit system.
According to senior scholars, going to Hajj without a permit is sinful, as it violates the lawful order and may harm the safety and experience of other pilgrims.

Allah says:

“O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.”
(Qur’an – An-Nisā’: 59)
