Good Morals and the Call to Them

Good morals are among the greatest virtues promoted by Islam and are considered a reflection of perfect faith and excellent Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized this by saying, “I was sent to perfect good character” (Narrated by Malik in Al-Muwatta).

Virtues of Good Morals in Islam

  1. Heavy Weight on the Scale on Judgment Day: Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Nothing is heavier on the believer’s scale on the Day of Judgment than good character” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi).
  2. A Means to Enter Paradise: Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the deeds that lead most people to Paradise. He replied, “Taqwa (piety) of Allah and good character” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi).
  3. A Measure of Complete Faith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The most complete of the believers in faith are those with the best character and those who are kindest to their families” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi).
  4. Elevation in Status with Allah: A person with good morals attains the rank of those who fast and pray regularly, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “A person may attain the rank of one who fasts and prays at night through their good character” (Narrated by Ahmad).

The Noble Morals of a Muslim

  • Forgiveness and Restraint of Anger: Allah says, (Those who restrain anger and pardon others) (Aal Imran: 134).
  • Kindness to Those Who Harm: Islam encourages repelling harm with kindness, as in the verse: (Repel evil with what is better) (Fussilat: 34).
  • Spreading Goodness and Avoiding Harm: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Treat people with good character” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi).

Sayings of the Righteous About Good Morals

  1. Al-Hasan Al-Basri said, “Good character is generosity, giving, and tolerance.”
  2. Imam Ahmad said, “Good character means not becoming angry or bearing grudges.”
  3. Ibn Al-Mubarak said, “Good character is a cheerful face, doing good to others, and refraining from harming them.”

How to Cultivate Good Morals

  1. Following the Example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): He was known for his great character, as described in the Quran: (Indeed, you are of great moral character) (Al-Qalam: 4).
  2. Instilling Moral Values from a Young Age: Teaching children ethical values early in life.
  3. Striving Against One’s Self: Developing good morals requires patience and persistence.
